New Jersey Child Support Attorney Describes Who Pays for Car Insurance for Young Drivers

New Jersey Child Support AttorneyWhich Parent Pays for the Car Insurance?

One very often neglected, but very important, detail for the family to consider that I am often asked as a New Jersey Child Support Attorney is, “I’m getting divorced, and one of my children is approaching the age where they’re going to get their learner’s permit, who is going to pay for the car insurance?” When that child gets his or her learner’s permit, the car insurance for the household in which that child lives will be significantly impacted, so how do we factor in that expense? The parents need to agree about what will happen when the child gets a learner’s permit, including how the cost of the child’s car insurance will be covered and who will pay for driving school. The parents need to talk about all of those considerations and they need to be included in the formulation of a proper settlement agreement. The impact of each child’s obtaining a driver’s license and what that will mean to the family’s financial position must be considered.
